From Squeaky Hinges to Walmart Shelves: How One Inventor Helped Spark Ready For Retail
Sometimes, one great partnership changes everything.
When retired Fire Chief George Zalucki reached out to Brian O'Dell, CEO of NOR-Dell, about a simple household frustration, neither of them could have predicted they were about to launch a product into Walmart—and lay the groundwork for something even bigger: the creation of Ready For Retail.
This is the story of Hinge Hero, and how helping one inventor get retail-ready became the inspiration for a platform that now supports entrepreneurs and product creators across the country.
The Problem: Squeaky Hinges and Messy Lubricant George had spent years dealing with squeaky door hinges and the mess that came with fixing them. Spraying lubricant usually meant drips, overspray, and stained walls or floors. As a hands-on problem-solver, he didn’t just complain—he invented a solution.
He designed and patented the Hinge Hero lubrication tool, a smart little gadget that slides over a door hinge and guides the spray exactly where it needs to go without leaving a mess.
“I knew it solved a real problem, but I had no idea how to get it in stores.”
— George Zalucki
Partnering with NOR-Dell In 2021, George connected with NOR-Dell, a firm led by retail veteran Brian O'Dell that had helped companies bring products to major retailers for over 25 years.
Together, they mapped out what it would take to make Hinge Hero retail-ready. The first major decision? Move manufacturing from China to the United States so the product could qualify for Walmart’s Made in the USA Open Call—a rare opportunity for American-made goods to pitch directly to Walmart buyers.
Accepted to Walmart’s Open Call Once Hinge Hero was officially being made in the U.S., George applied to Walmart’s 2022 Open Call. He was accepted, and he and Brian immediately got to work building out a pitch strategy, product presentation, and shelf-ready packaging.
Then they flew to Bentonville, Arkansas, to pitch Hinge Hero in person.
The Golden Ticket Moment Inside a meeting room with five Walmart buyers, George delivered his pitch with Brian by his side. The product was innovative, affordable, and positioned perfectly for the DIY/home improvement market.
The buyers responded with immediate enthusiasm. At the end of the session, they handed George a Golden Ticket—a deal on the spot to get Hinge Hero into Walmart stores.
George and Brian were featured in this recap video of the June 2022 Walmart Open Call.
From Deal to Delivery: The Real Work Begins Getting a deal is exciting, but delivering on it takes preparation and perseverance.
Over the next year, the NOR-Dell team worked closely with George to:
• Finalize packaging that met Walmart’s requirements• Build a compliant shelf-ready display
• Pass product safety and compliance testing
• Set up vendor agreements
• Enter product data into Walmart’s system
• Establish EDI integration for digital ordering
• Align supply chain and fulfillment logistics
In 2023, after nearly 20 months of planning, pitching, and perfecting—Hinge Hero hit Walmart shelves.
A New Chapter: Expanding the Brand In 2024, George took things one step further by partnering with the Texas Chemical Company (TCC) to develop a custom Hinge Hero Spray Lubricant—a high-performance solution designed specifically for door hinges and locks. George also created Hinge Hero XL, a larger version of the original tool designed for commercial hinges. Packaged all together, Hinge Hero now offers a complete "kit" that includes both tools and the specially formulated spray lubricant.
The Hinge Hero Lubrication Kit is scheduled to replace the original tool on Walmart shelves in 2025, expanding the brand’s footprint.
The Partnership That Sparked Something Bigger Helping George go from inventor to retail partner wasn’t just a success story—it was a turning point.
The work that went into preparing Hinge Hero for Walmart highlighted a gap in the market: thousands of entrepreneurs had great products, but no clear path to get them retail ready.
That insight became the foundation for a new platform—Ready For Retail.
“Helping George succeed was the spark. We realized there were so many more Georges out there—and they needed a roadmap. That’s how Ready for Retail was born.”
— Brian O’Dell
